- James Tanaka and Mark Sorrells. Cornell Wheat Breeding and the Wheat CAP Project. Seed Growers Field Day. Cornell University. July 6, 2006
- Carl A. Griffey. Breeding and Genomics Instruction and Practical Training of Students. Virginia Governor’s School Program. July 6 18, 2006. Virginia Tech.
Sixteen high school students from different regions of Virginia, who selected plant sciences as their focal interest attended daily lectures, tours and participated in hands on training courses. Four students who selected genomics as their focal interest received nine days of training in our lab on procedures for DNA extraction including grinding of leaf tissue, drying DNA, measuring DNA concentration, as well as guidance on preparation of reports, which each student must prepare as part of this program. In addition these students received instruction on applications using DNA technology and were assigned reading materials for review. The group of 16 students participated in a lecture and discussion session given by Drs. C.A. Griffey and Jianli Chen, which introduced the students to the different types of wheat, areas of production, different quality properties and end uses, disease and insect problems, traditional and MAS breeding methods. The 16 students were then taken to a producer’s field and to Roanoke City Mills for a tour of the mills research lab and milling operations.
