Why is this population important?Parental linesPlatte is a hard white winter wheat cultivar released and marketed by Agripro. Platte is known to have superior bread baking quality, low concentration of polyphenol oxidase in the grain, and high yellow alkaline noodle color stability. CO940610 is an unreleased experimental line released by the wheat breeding program at CSU. The line was a top yielding line in our testing but was discarded due to very inferior baking quality characteristics. Detailed information on the noodle color stability of CO940610 is not yet available. The mapWe have chosen to conduct our mapping in a population between two hard white winter wheats, focusing on bread baking quality and yellow alkaline noodle color stability. Hard white wheat breeding has become an important component of several programs in the hard winter wheat region of the US Great Plains and development of dual-purpose wheat cultivars, with desirable bread baking and alkaline noodle color stability, will help to make hard white wheat produced in the High Plains a preferred product in both domestic and export markets. The main objective of our mapping population is to investigate the genetic factors contributing to bread baking quality (dough mixing properties, crumb grain characteristics), polyphenol oxidase concentration, and color stability of yellow alkaline noodles. We will also be working collaboratively with other programs in the hard winter wheat region on phenotyping of populations under their direction, particularly the hard white wheat population under development at Kansas State University focused on identification of genetic factors controlling pre-harvest sprouting tolerance (Heyne/KS01HW163-4).
