Why is this population important?Parental linesGrandin*5/ND614 is a hard white spring wheat. It has good adaptation to the Upper Midwest with excellent bread-making quality, but is very susceptible to preharvest sprouting. NY18/Clark's Cream 40-1 is a hard white winter wheat derived from the cross of two winter wheat lines with very high resistance to preharvest sprouting. This is a BC1 recombinant inbred population with Grandin*5/ND614 used as the recurrent parent. Only recombinant inbreds with spring growth habit were retained in the population. The mapCurrently, less than 0.1% of the Minnesota wheat acreage is planted to hard white wheat. One reason for this is their high susceptibility to preharvest sprouting. Also, there are notable differences among hard red spring wheats in the region for their reaction to preharvest sprouting. Genes for preharvest sprouting resistance in the NY18/Clark's Cream 40-1 parent would likely improve red-seeded wheats as well. Go back |
