Why is this population important?

Parental lines

Caledonia is currently the highest yielding soft white winter wheat line released by Cornell and has excellent milling and baking quality. Caledonia is lodging resistant, partly because of its short plant height, but is susceptible to preharvest sprouting. Cayuga soft white winter wheat is tall, has modest yield, average milling and baking quality and excellent resistance to preharvest sprouting believed to be derived from Clark's Cream.

The map

Soft white winter wheat has traditionally been grown in this region in spite of the rainy, humid weather at harvest time. Consequently, traditional markets for high quality white wheat, especially the bran, remain strong. Preharvest sprouting and milling and baking quality are important traits for buyers of soft white wheat and are given high priority by buyers and processors in the northeastern US.
