Why is this population important?

The Jagger x 2174 mapping population is undergoing final seed increase in 2006. This population is expected to produce wide genetic variation for several key traits relevant to the southern Plains. Examples which will be targeted first in phenotyping are first-hollow-stem development, leaf rust resistance (probably based on Lr34), barley yellow dwarf virus resistance (probably based on Bydv1), acid-soil tolerance, test weight and kernel size, lodging resistance, and Hessian fly resistance. Subsequent work will focus on mixograph stability index and farinograph stability as indicators of dough strength, bird-cherry oat tolerance, and high-temperature-sensitive germination.
