Why is this population important?

Parental lines

Stephens is a widely adapted soft white cultivar released in 1977 that continues to be grown in significant acreage of the U.S. Pacific Northwest due to its high yield potential. In addition, Stephens has durable high-temperature adult-plant (HTAP) resistance to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis). OR9900553 is semi-dwarf soft white genotype with high yield potential under irrigated production conditions and excellent soft white wheat quality. A particularly attractive feature of OR9900553 is that it has extra soft kernel texture and high break flour yield.

The map

The population was developed principally to understand the genetic basis of the extra-soft kernel characteristics of OR9900553 as well as other aspects of soft wheat end-use quality (milling yield, dough rheology, protein concentration, cookie diameter, etc.). The population will also be used to genetically dissect high-temperature adult-plant (HTAP) resistance to stripe rust derived from Stephens.
