Why is this population important?

Parental lines

Weebill 1 and Jupateco 73S are both CIMMYT spring wheat breeding lines. Weebill 1 has 3 to 5 genes for slow rusting adult plant leaf rust resistance. Jupateco 73S is susceptible to most races of leaf rust and stripe rust. The population developed from this cross is not segregating for maturity or height, thus these should not be confounding factors in the phenotypic data.

Although Texas grows mostly hard winter wheat, we have chosen to do mapping of slow rusting adult plant leaf rust resistance in a population developed with two CIMMYT spring wheat lines that have been very well characterized. Durable leaf rust and stripe rust resistance are high priority traits for hard red winter wheat. We will use the markers developed by this project to introgress adult plant leaf rust resistance genes from Weebill 1 spring wheat into elite hard winter wheat germplasm.
